Young Marble Giants interviews
- "Let's
Hear It for Quiet Music." By Dave McCullough. From Sounds,
May 17, 1980. An interview interspersed with the author's random
observations on the music. YMG songs being "obsessed with
food?"
- "Gentle Young Giants." By Mark Ellen. From Sounds,
date unknown but presumably something in 1980 after the above article.
- "How Green Was My Minimalism. " By Graham Lock. From NME,
June 14, 1980. An excellent article that includes a first-hand account of a live show
("That was our worst-ever gig," Alison murmurs. "I feel terrible.")
- "YMG." By V. Vale and Andrea Juno. From Re/Search
#1, 1980. The discussion is almost entirely about Welsh ephemera. I was 15 years old when
I first saw this, and I remember feeling ripped off because there was hardly anything
about the band itself. Now, of course, it seems like one of their more fascinating
interviews.
- "Young Marble Giants: Yo!" By Derek Freedman. From New
York Rocker, January 1981. An interview most likely from very late in their career.
Includes discussion of the Testcard EP and The Gist, and rumblings of intergroup
conflict.
- "Gigantic:
The Story of Young Marble Giants." By Mike Appelstein. From Writer's Block #4, spring 1989.
My early attempt at a retrospective article, covering YMG's basic history. I've also
included short commentaries from Alan Korn and Adam Potkay, which originally appeared as
sidebars in WB. This article was partially responsible for Stuart's deal with
Feel Good All Over, so I can't cringe too badly.
- A great Colossal Youth memoir/review
by Everett True.
- Kurt
Cobain tells Melody Maker that Colossal Youth was one
of his favorite albums, and shares Nirvana's plans to cover "Credit
in the Straight World" (which never did happen, though Hole ended
up covering it a couple years later).
- "They
Might Be Giants Again!" and "They
Cast A Long Shadow." Both by Steve Tucker. From
South Wales Echo, December 2002. Two basic where-are-they-now
pieces from a Wales newspaper. Note the end of the first article,
which hints at new recordings and concerts!
- "Wasted
Youth." By Ken Taylor. From the San Francisco Bay-Guardian,
February 2-8, 2005. A perspective on coming to Colossal Youth late
- "Everett True's
tribute to Rough Trade." Drowned in Sound webzine, November
2008. Everett digs up the YMG interview he did in 1980, when he
was a tender English college student. Not sure exactly when this
chat took place, but Stuart's already talking about The Gist, so it must
have been late in the year. Some great photos as well.
The Gist
- Embrace
the Herd review. By
Johnny Black. From Mojo magazine, 1997. Includes an
interview with Stuart Moxham. This article is what got Rykodisc
interested in reissuing Embrace the Herd on CD.
Stuart Moxham
- Stuart Moxham in America: June
1982." By Mike Appelstein. From Caught In Flux issue #1, spring
1993. I interviewed Stuart in June 1992 before a solo show at New York City's CBGB
(with Versus, Magnetic Fields and David Kilgour). John Henderson of Feel Good All Over
Records chipped in with questions, as did Magnetic Fields drummer Claudia Gonson. Includes
a photo of Stuart playing live in Chicago, IL on the same tour.
- Speaking of John Henderson, he wrote a
piece on Stuart for Popwatch magazine
in 1993. It includes background info on recording the Random Rules and Barbara
Manning Sings With The Original Artists albums, as well as wishful thinking that
never materialized (projects with Lora Logic and Alison Statton) and outright fabrications
on John's part (Stuart mixing Nirvana's In Utero, Sinead O'Connor covering
"Knives [Always Fall]").
- "The Invisible Man: Stuart Moxham's Minimalist Pop." By Neil
Strauss. From Option, 1993. An interview with Stuart during his second
trip to NYC, this time finding him at CBGB 313 with Cat Power and Barbara Manning. Covers
his post-Gist, pre-Signal Path years with perhaps a bit too much dramatic pathos.
- Stuart appears on chickfactor
zine's website answering several polls. Click here
to get to the right page, and then click on the link entitled
"polls polls polls!"
Alison Statton & Spike
- Steve Burt saw Alison Statton & Spike perform in
1994. He reviews the show in this
article, which originally appeared in edited form in CMJ Music Monthly.
Includes some choice comments from Alison and Stuart, and goes nicely into detail about
YMG's history.
